My exciting life....

By the way, my real name is Steve Paulson..

I was born in Immanuel Hospital on North Ames Avenue in Omaha, NE on February 18th, 1963... and the world has never been the same (at least for me and my family!) I was born into a loving family who taught me to trust and to give love easily. I have a brother and two sisters (but my sisters each have TWO brothers... weird, eh?) At an early age, I decided I liked this Jesus guy... a decision I still favor!

I went to school at JG Masters Elementary, Morton Jr High, Horace Mann 9th grade center, and then on to fame and fortune at Northwest High School.

In high school, I was able to date any girl I pleased... problem was, I never pleased any girls, so I didn't date much. I was heavily involved in choirs of all sorts, going to all-state as both a tenor and a bass, and I acted in a few musicals, and was a pretty decent student as well.

Following high school, I entered the University of Nebraska just in time to see them miss winning the national championship 3 straight years by one play (OK, that first year, Clemson killed us in the Orange Bowl, but the other two years it was just one play!!!) It was a great time to have student tickets. One year, we were seated about row 17 on the 35 yard line.... talk about great tickets! and the entire season only cost $35!

After my freshman year, I was at home and my darling sister Laura phoned and asked me to deliver a package to her at work (Wendy's!) So I did, and there met this charming girl behind the counter... I ordered a single, and she said, "I'm single!" and the rest is history!

OK, really I just flirted with her a while, and then visited Wendy's a few more times until I thought she might be worth looking up next year, as she was also to be a Husker the next year. When she said yes to a second date, I knew I had found the girl I would spend the rest of my life with... There at the U, I changed majors with alarming frequency, until, having been accepted into a competitive medical program, I decided to forego any chance at money and become a teacher... (OK to cheer here.) My wife laments that with every change in major I had, there was a corresponding drop in prospective salary, but at least we have good vacation benefits!

At the university, I got involved with this group called InterVarsity, which really helped me get through college without totally damaging my body and soul. They also helped me learn to study the Bible correctly - tear it apart and read it from the perspective of who wrote it.

Karen and I got married, and finished up our schooling at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where we could be closer to our parents for a while. Upon gradutating Magna cum Laude with a degree in Education/Natural Sciences, we attempted to find jobs. HA! Not in that area at that time.... Realizing that we needed to eat, we rustled up prospects in other fields, hoping to bag a job in education somewhere. We went to the University library to look up phone numbers in Texas and California, where everyone knows teachers are needed, and hidden amongst the shelves between humongous volumes was this tiny Laredo phone book. I grabbed it because it was in Texas, right? (well it barely is!) Looking through, I saw the Laredo Independent and the United Independent School Districts. I chose to call United because the name sounded bigger. (At that time United was the ONLY high school in the district - we now have 4!)

The phone call was a timely one - I spoke to the personnel director, who had just hung up with someone in a science position who had failed their EXCET exam for the last time, and who was therefore ineligible to teach that year. After hearing of my grades and experiences, he was interested in me sending my info in to him quickly, as he sent info to me about them.

We got a phone call on a Wednesday evening telling us two spots were waiting us should we be able to traverse the nation and be there for work on Monday, so we packed up our lives and headed like strangers into a strange land. It was under a freaky cold front that we left NE, and 80 degrees later, we arrived in the roasting climate we have come to love. I'll admit, the first years were strange, but Laredo grows on you, and while people here still think ME strange (for good reason!) we fit in just fine now.

I became comfortable teaching, we found good friends, a good church, and before you know it, we became parents of the two most adorable, intelligent and lovable children God could bless anyone with.

I taught a Bible study at my home on Tuesday evenings for over a decade, attended by high school and college kids interested in learning more about the Holy One of Israel. (That's that Jesus fellow again!) Right now we're starting something a little different, but I'd love to answer your questions, or have private lessons if you want to know more or open up a dialogue. email me at QandA@stevepaulson.com All you need is an open mind and some questions!
